Hey, 2025 and 2026! Programs Have Been Happening Online & In-person, and Will Continue To!<\/span><\/b><\/span>
\nI’ve not been keeping this calendar updated…<\/span><\/h3>\n

On December 21, 2024, I led a beautiful, experiential Winter Solstice Ceremony, Enter Darkness, Return to Light<\/em>,<\/strong> which included Drumming, SongChant, Ritual, and Circle Dance. It was held at the OMazing sanctuary of Center Street Retreat in Orlando, and welcomed men and women…<\/p>\n

January thru May of 2025, I taught five ongoing, weekly group Djembe Classes in Nokomis,<\/strong> for Beginner, Beyond Beginner, and Intermediate students…<\/p>\n

I held five introductory Women, Rhythm, & Ritual\u2122,<\/em> 3-and-a-half-hour sacred rhythm circles for women, in Nokomis.<\/strong> Of those 5 workshops, 3 were focused on The<\/em> Frame Drum<\/em> and 2 were focused on The Tambourine Path\u2122<\/em>, and all were for Beginners.<\/p>\n

Then, I held three follow-up Zoom sessions for Tambourine and Frame Drum participants,<\/strong> offering them some review, time for Q&A and reflections that arose since the in-person experience, and then new material…<\/p>\n

In May, 2025, I was a guest teaching artist at a Bahamas Dolphin Swim Retreat<\/em>,<\/strong> where I drummed and sang (and Jeff played his ukulele and sang) before the boat departed each morning, as well as on the daily boat rides… In the evenings I led a Healing Drum Temple<\/em>, a Guided InnerVision DrumJourney<\/em>, and a SpiralSong Circle<\/em>…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Summer of 2025, I offered weekly online group Djembe and Tambourine Classes,<\/strong> but broke my wrist! So they were postponed.<\/p>\n

October-November, 2025, I held online classes in Djembe and The Tambourine Path.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Moonrise Mentorship<\/em><\/strong> for women who envision bringing tambourine processions into their communities, were held online from mid-November to early December.<\/p>\n

None of these have found their way to this Website Calendar!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

And neither will my upcoming Winter 2026 offerings:<\/strong> Weekly in-person Djembe Classes<\/strong> (Beginner, BEYOND the Beyond Beginner, and Intermediate), and Weekly Women’s Sacred Drum Circles<\/strong> (Frame Drum and Tambourine Classes, sister-centered, with mindfulness, SongChant, ritual, rhythmic embodiment, and all the works).<\/p>\n

\u2728 BARBARA GAIL is a dancer and percussionist, passionate rhythm and hand-drum mentor, masterful teacher’s teacher and dynamic alchemist in the teaching, performing and ritual arts of rhythm and movement.<\/p>\n

Frame drums and tambourines were predominantly played by women<\/strong> throughout the Ancient Mediterranean World, in processions for both ceremony and celebration.<\/p>\n

Drumming, dancing and singing were among the primary skills of Temple Priestesses<\/strong>, spiritual leaders who used these Ritual Arts to harness the elements, rouse and unify community consciousness, and attain spiritual awareness for healing, divination, transformation and activation.<\/p>\n

This was beautifully described in Layne Redmond\u2019s seminal and transformational book, When the Drummers Were Women: a Spiritual History of Rhythm<\/em><\/strong>, which has been translated into several languages.<\/p>\n

Layne also noted that as contemporary women<\/strong>, we’re discovering and intuitively utilizing the Ritual Arts for connection and inspiration, as we seek deeper meaning in our lives<\/strong>. With these sacred tools, we soften into our feminine essence, return to our woman soul, and birth an expanded sense of ourselves both individually and collectively.<\/p>\n

\n4 \u2013 A double-row jingled and headed tambourine if you have one (many will be provided and available for purchase).
\n5 – Write this now in your journal (and bring it with you) the first names of: your mother, all of your grandmothers, all of your great-grandmothers, and going back as far as you can. (If your relationship to any of these women is\/was traumatic, feel free to substitute their name(s) with another woman who significantly impacted your life in a more positive way.)
\n6 – One item for the alter that represents for you EITHER: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, or Ether.<\/p>\n

WHAT TO WEAR:<\/strong><\/span>
\n1 \u2013 Dress comfortably and in layers if you tend towards being chilled or hot. We\u2019ll be mostly indoors, and go outdoors for a short while.
\n2 \u2013 Ceremonial Attire and Goddess Garb are welcome if you\u2019re inspired, and is totally optional. (Come as you are!)
\n3 \u2013 Be prepared to remove your shoes before entering The Magic Room, which is carpeted.
\n4 \u2013 We\u2019ll be going outside and walking the garden paths during the ritual (weather permitting), so sensible shoes (that might get a little wet if it rained) are suggested.
\n5 \u2013 A light rain jacket may be a good idea, if going outside is drizzly and drippy, but not pouring\u2026<\/p>\n

\nThe doors to The Magic Room will open no earlier than 1:45pm. Plan to arrive BEFORE that then, giving you ample time to park, walk from the parking area, check-in with registration, use the rest room, etc..<\/p>\n

These drums were once predominantly played by women throughout the ancient world, in positions of spiritual leadership in their communities, as described in Layne Redmond’s book, When the Drummers Were Women: a Spiritual History of Rhythm<\/em>.

About the experience of Polyrhythm on zoom:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\n\u2766<\/span>\u00a0 For us, drumming in a polyrhythmic ensemble (when more than one rhythm is being played in the group at once), is living in the land of drum magic. After learning all the rhythms, the feeling of connection inherent with interlocking rhythms in the drumming ensemble experience, is positively climactic! Yes, even raw beginners can do this!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2766<\/span>\u00a0 And for that, you need at least 3 people: you playing your rhythm, someone playing the same rhythm with you (support), & someone playing an accompanying rhythm (making polyrhythm). You also need to have a sense of the basic Pulse, & how to align with it. The Pulse is the thread that connects all our parts together.<\/p>\n

\u2766<\/span>\u00a0 With both of us on screen, each playing a different rhythm, we can support your experience of a polyrhythmic ensemble! \nThe tambourine is a jingled frame drum, and a magical, trance-inducing instrument, steeped in the feminine lineage of herstory.<\/p>\n

Thousands of ancient artifacts depict Goddesses portrayed with a frame drum, also played by Priestesses and Everyday Women, in the temples and in the streets, in ceremonies and celebrations.<\/p>\n

After practicing rhythmic entrainment with our voices, feet, and hands, we’ll learn to play two of the strokes on the tambourine, the jingled frame drum that sings in processions. Then tonight, we’ll perform our beautiful rhythmic procession, as we lead the SingFest23 organizers and workshop facilitators into the sanctuary. \nBarbara Gail is the creator and founder of \u00a0The Rhythm Inlet<\/em>, Women, Rhythm & Ritual<\/em>, Moonrise: Daughters of an Ancient Pulse<\/em>, DrumRise! The Art of Women’s Drumming<\/em>, and The Tambourine Path<\/em>. A well-versed, seasoned instructor and teacher\u2019s teacher, her various hand-drumming classes and events have been infused for nearly 30 years, with the teachings of her longtime tambourine and frame drum mentor and friend, the late Layne Redmond.<\/p>\n

Layne authored the highly acclaimed, seminal book, When the Drummers Were Women: a Spiritual History of Rhythm<\/em>, now translated into several languages. Layne documented the herstory of women who drummed, danced and sang, in the temples and in the streets, in ceremonies and celebrations, thousands of years ago, throughout the Ancient Mediterranean World. These women harnessed rhythm, sound and movement to rouse community consciousness and attain spiritual awareness for healing and divination.\u00a0The face of women’s spiritual drumming has been, and continues to be transformed, internationally, thanks to Layne.<\/p>\n

Barbara represented Layne Redmond and her Legacy at the Indianapolis Convention Center in November, 2021, where Layne was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Percussive Arts Society’s International Convention (PASIC), the largest percussion organization and 4-day convention of its kind in the world.\u00a0Invited by PASIC, Barbara taught the workshop, The Tambourine in the Layne Redmond Tradition<\/em>\u00a0to a record-breaking crowd, maxing-out the room’s limit of 130 participants, with 20 or more listening outside in the hallway. She also led the women’s tambourine group procession after the induction ceremony.<\/p>\n

Barbara and her husband, Jeff Hanna, owned and operated The Rhythm Inlet World Drum and Percussion retail store and teaching studio in Maine from 1996-2005, and in southwest Florida (with the addition of the ukulele) from 2005 until closing its doors in January, 2022.<\/p>\n

And for that, you need at least 3 people: you playing your rhythm, someone playing the same rhythm with you (support), & someone playing an accompanying rhythm (polyrhythm). You also need to have a sense of the basic pulse, & how to align with it. This is\u00a0the thread that connects all our parts together.<\/p>\n

With both of us on screen, each playing a different rhythm, we can support your experience of a poly-rhythmic ensemble! I’m thrilled & deeply honored to share with you that I’ll be teaching this workshop during\u00a0the 4-day Percussive Arts Society\u2019s International Convention (PASIC), in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is the largest annual percussive arts convention in the world!<\/p>\n

On this auspicious date, that very evening, my teacher & friend, Layne Redmond (1952-2013), will be posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame in a special ceremony at this convention. And in a field dominated by men, it’s huge that the author of “When the Drummers Were Women: a Spiritual History of Rhythm<\/em>” — unearthing & documenting the lost but not forgotten herstory of Ancient Priestess Drummers — is being inducted into their Hall of Fame!<\/p>\n

\nOn Thursday, November 11, 2021, Layne Redmond (1952-2013) will be posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame, in a special ceremony held at the 4-day Percussive Arts Society\u2019s International Convention (PASIC), in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is the largest percussive arts annual convention in the world! And in a field dominated by men, it’s huge that the author of “When the Drummers Were Women: a Spiritual History of Rhythm” — unearthing & documenting the lost but not forgotten herstory of Ancient Priestess Drummers — is being inducted into their Hall of Fame!<\/p>\n

On & around this auspicious date of 11-11, sacred drumming will be taking place around the country & around the world, as students, followers, friends & fans energetically connect with one another, & to Layne’s memory & legacy.<\/p>\n

Layne Redmond was my teacher & friend. Her work launched the modern women’s ritual frame drum movement, & has transformed many lives, including my own.<\/p>\n

I’m thrilled & deeply honored to share with you, that I\u2019ve accepted the invitation to help represent Layne’s Legacy at the convention! On the same day as her Induction Ceremony, I’ll be teaching a Tambourine Workshop in the Layne Redmond Tradition, & leading a Women\u2019s Ceremonial & Celebratory Tambourine Procession. So 11-11-21 will be Layne Redmond Day at PASIC!<\/p>\n

\nOur Saturday, October 30th online Women’s Tambourine Ritual is my gift to you, in return for all the blessings I’ve received thanks to Layne & her seminal body of work! Sophie & her Aunt Barbara live hundreds of miles apart, but are now closer than ever thanks to the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, & the gift of FaceTime. While taking Jeff’s Beginner Ukulele Class together on zoom in May & June,

Barbara mentioned she once considered creating a class for children.<\/p>\n

Sophie immediately began scouring websites for easy-peasy-but-not-babyish songs for the class (Sophie has the final word on this). Barbara dug into her old files, & they started sending links to each other.<\/p>\n

Within minutes Sophie was making a Power Point Slide Show to describe & promote the kids class, without any prompting from Barbara. They continued updating the slide show until they landed on their final ‘giraffe’ (LOL ‘draft’).<\/p>\n

Sophie sent Barbara voice-over recordings of herself reading it, & Barbara decided to include all of Sophie’s work in this video, to help spread the word about their class.<\/p>\n

Needless to say, this has been a flurry of inspiration & communication for weeks!<\/p>\n

Thanks for watching our video! Even if you’re not interested in this class, ya gotta watch. I mean, really, this 9yo kid’s a fun friend to all her know her.<\/p>\n

Ahhh, the Equinox, night & day in equal balance. We get 2 of them, one Vernal (Spring), the other Autumnal (Fall).<\/p>\n

The Spring Equinox is a time of renewal, rebirth, planting & seeding. The Goddess Oestre is the Germanic name for the Goddess of Spring which signaled the planting season in ancient calendars. Her name, Oestre, survived into the modern Christian holiday, as Easter.<\/p>\n

On March 20th Barbara Gail leads the meditation circle for the Spring Equinox Ceremony. She’s an experienced ceremonialist with a deep respect for the changing cycles. She brings nuances to the ceremony that enliven the gather.<\/p>\n

Saturday night by the fire, I’ll accompany myself with poetry & song while drumming, in a ritual performance that speaks to “When the Drummers Were Women: a Spiritual Herstory of Rhythm”. I’ll also show some actual images of ancient artifacts depicting Goddesses, Priestesses, & every day women, with their frame drums.<\/p>\n

On Sunday evening, I’ll offer drumming during our communal ritual.<\/p>\n
